UNEXPLODED WWII BOMB FOUND UNDER PARIS TRAIN STATION
Gare du Nord in Paris was closed after an unexploded World War Two bomb was found this morning.
Rail workers were putting up a new bridge over the current railway lines at a building site located north of the station. The 500kg bomb was found just two metres under the ground.
The station is located in the area of Saint Denis. Parts of the Paris suburb were closed and local police evacuated 200 people.
Even though the closed off area included six schools and an elderly person care facility, local authorities didn’t close them as they weren’t at risk because they didn’t have windows overlooking the area.
All trains to and from one of Europe’s biggest stations, including the Eurostar, have been cancelled.
Eurostar said its services will be halted until further notice, but believed that it would reopen by Saturday afternoon. To keep up with the weekend travelling demand, two extra return train journeys to London and Brussels were added.
Those passengers who weren’t able to travel were given the chance to change their booking, get a refund, or a voucher for future travel use.
The cancellation of trains and the closure of the area around the Gare du Nord caused heavy traffic delays in the immediate area around the station.
The bomb was safely defused.
