WIND CAUSES CHAOS IN CAPE TOWN
A level 9 warning for damaging winds in Cape Town has been released by the South African Weather Services.
Large parts of the Western Cape have been damaged due to the gale-force winds.
Chapman’s Peak Drive and the Huguenot Tunnel have both been closed after the wind forced a truck’s trailer to be blown off a bridge. The incident happened on the N1 near the tunnel. Luckily, the truck driver managed to exit the truck and didn’t get hurt.
The SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) asked motorists to stay off the roads in the area.
“Strong winds have hampered the recovery operations of another vehicle blown over on the viaduct, and the tunnel was closed to all traffic until the obstruction on the viaduct had been removed.”
Several roads in and around the city have seen damage with videos on social media showing debris lying around. Kevin Jacobs, the spokesperson for the Cape Town Traffic Services said traffic officers are dealing with minor incidents and obstructions due to the wind and adverse weather conditions.
“Officers are removing debris and branches from the roadway in various parts of the City.”
The province also faces the risk of flash flooding and fires.
