ALEC BALDWIN’S CASE DISMISSED
A judge has cleared US actor Alec Baldwin of involuntary manslaughter. His trial was dismissed based on key evidence being withheld from the defence.
The 66-year-old was accused of involuntary manslaughter after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died while they were shooting the movie Rust back in 2021. Baldwin shot the woman dead with what he thought was a gun with fake ammunition.
The armourer, Hannah Gutierrrez-Reed, who loaded the gun with live ammunition on that fatal day, has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter. She has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
During his trial, the judge dismissed Baldwin’s trial after it was found that key evidence over the shooting on set had been withheld from the defence. Essentially, this means Baldwin’s lawyers didn’t have enough evidence to prepare for their case.
“There is no way for the court to right this wrong,” said Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.
Soon after the judge’s decision, Baldwin took to Instagram to thank those who supported him.
“There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now. To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.”
