WESTERN CAPE CONSIDERS DECLARING STATE OF DISASTER

The Western Cape has been battered by severe weather over the past few days and it seems as if the worst is yet to come.

This has led to the Western Cape government considering declaring a state of disaster.

Premier Alan Winde said, “A state of disaster is obviously something we will look at, but we’re in the middle of the crisis. We have to first assess it, and we will do that as soon we can”.

The request to declare a state of disaster was initiated by the ANC’s provincial legislature leader, Kahlid Sayed.

“We can only really take that decision as a cabinet once we’ve assessed the full damage of what’s happening. And, of course, there’s days of rain and severe weather still to come.”

On Thursday, schools in the Overberg and Winelands areas were closed and will remain closed on Friday.

In other areas, the schools are allowed to open if it’s approved by the head of the provincial Department of Education.

The Department reported that 217 schools across the province have now reported some form of damage.
