GREECE INTRODUCES 6-DAY WORK WEEK
While the world is flirting with the idea of a 4-day work week, Greece is going in the exact opposite direction.
The idea behind the extended work week? A bid to kick-start the country’s economy that’s still struggling to bounce back after Europe’s worst financial crisis in decades.
The Greek government has announced the new six-day work week will fall under an employment law named Law 5053/2023. The law isn’t compulsory, and companies can choose to adopt it.
However, if a company chooses to adopt the law, it must apply to all its employees.
The extra day’s work won’t go unnoticed, though. In return for the extra hours, employees will be rewarded with an additional 40% of their daily wage added to their regular daily wage on the extra working day.
Under the new law, full-time employees will be allowed to have a second part time job. This means their daily work hours could be extended up to 13 hours. In total, employees will be able to work up to 78 working hours per week.
Not everyone is in favour of the new law as employee wellness and the impact more time away from their kids will have on working parents, are worrying topics.
