DOWNPOUR INTERRUPTS ANOTHER WOMEN’S CWC MATCH
Rain once again spoiled the show at the Women’s Cricket World Cup. The final league game between India and Bangladesh was washed out in Mumbai on Sunday.
The co-hosts did manage to get some valuable practice before their semifinal against defending champions Australia, but the weather had other plans. Chasing a revised target of 126 in 27 overs, India reached 57 without loss in 8.4 overs when the rain returned.
Smriti Mandhana was on 34 and Amanjot Kaur on 15 when play was finally called off at the DY Patil Stadium.
The seasonal rain has wreaked havoc on this year’s tournament. This match marked the sixth match of the tournament to be abandoned because of rain, with five others already washed out in Colombo. Earlier, Amanjot Kaur had stepped in to open after Pratika Rawal twisted her ankle while fielding.
India’s bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Radha Yadav, did well to keep Bangladesh to 119 for 9 in 27 overs. Radha picked up 3 for 30, while Shree Charani grabbed two wickets. Bangladesh’s Sharmin Akhter (36) and Sobhana Mostary (26 off 21) tried to fight back, but regular interruptions broke their momentum.
With the group stage done, England will meet South Africa in Wednesday’s first semifinal, while India face Australia on Thursday in Navi Mumbai. The final is set for November 2 at the same venue.
