PARAGUAY PULLS OUT OF 2027 RUGBY WORLD CUP
There’s been some drama ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers. World Rugby’s confirmed that Brazil will step in for Paraguay at the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai from 8 to 18 November.
Paraguay had to withdraw after realising they’d accidentally used a player who wasn’t eligible in their play-offs against Brazil.
World Rugby said they appreciated Paraguay owning up to it and understood it wasn’t a dishonest move, just an admin slip-up.
Paraguayan Rugby Union President Gustavo Borgognon admitted it’s been a tough pill to swallow. “It’s not easy, but it’s the right call,” he said. “We got the eligibility rule wrong. No one tried to cheat, and we’re taking full responsibility.”
He also gave recognition to everyone helping grow rugby in Paraguay, saying the sport has come a long way through hard work and dedication. Despite the setback, he’s confident they’ll come back stronger.
World Rugby used the moment to remind everyone that it’s up to teams and organisers to double-check player eligibility. They even have an online “Player Eligibility Checker” to make that easier.
