JOBURG COULD FACE MORE NAME CHANGES
More city street names have been proposed for several streets in Johannesburg. The areas affected include Westbury, Eldorado Park, and Braamfontein.
The city recently released a statement with more information about the proposed name changes.
“Among the shortlist of proposed names is writer Don Mattera, together with sporting legend Donnie Gilmour.
“Teenage shooting victim Nathaniel Julies has also been proposed for a street naming in Eldorado Park.”
In honour of the late Mthokozisi Ntumba, the city proposed that De Beer Street in Braamfontein should be named Mthokozisi Ntumba Street.
Along with the street name change in Eldorado Park, the city also proposed that the Westbury Recreation Centre should be renamed to the Don Mattera Recreation Centre, while the Mabaleng Sports Ground in Westbury should be renamed the Donnie Gilmour Sports Ground.
While the name changes are just proposals, the city urged residents, interested parties, and stakeholders to submit their comments on the proposed renamings to the City Directory of Arts, Culture, and Heritage.
Comments can be submitted until 31 March 2025.
