R2 BILLION METH LAB DISCOVERED IN LIMPOPO

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested four people after uncovering a massive drug manufacturing lab on a farm just outside Groblersdal. The owner of the farm was also arrested.

Two of the people arrested are Mexican nationals. This has added to the workload and pressure around the case.

Katlego Mogale, national spokesperson for the Hawks told Reuters that this is the first local case where Mexican citizens were involved.

“It means our task has just become very difficult.”

The Hawks raided the property after receiving a tip-off about suspicious activity on the farm.

They proceeded to search four structures on the farm where they found large quantities of chemicals used to make drugs. The chemicals found are usually found in acetone and crystal meth.

The Haws said the chemicals have a street value of R2 billion.

CNN reports that the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its embassy in South Africa had “not received the respective consular notification and is in contact with local authorities to find out the details of the case and the alleged Mexicans involved”.

The four suspects will appear at the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of manufacturing, dealing and possessing illicit drugs, according to the police service.
