RONALDO BREAKS WORLD CUP RECORD
He might have broken many records in his highly successful career, but becoming the top goal scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history is something Cristiano Ronaldo will cherish forever.
The Portuguese striker shared the previous record with Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz before breaking that record when he scored a goal in the 22nd minute against Hungary on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old took to social media to share his thoughts.
“It is no secret that representing the National Team means a lot to me, and that’s why I’m very proud to have reached this unique milestone for Portugal.
“Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. See you in November to seal the qualification for the World Cup!”
Just moments before the halftime whistle blew, Ronaldo extended his record to 41 goals when he scored another goal.
He also extended the men’s international scoring record he broke back in 2021, as he’s now scored 143 goals for his home country.
Ironically, Ronaldo’s achievements weren’t enough to secure a win for Portugal as Hungary managed to score two goals as well.
Portugal is yet to qualify for the FIFA World Cup taking place in North America next year.
