SABC TO BROADCAST OLYMPICS FOR FREE

The South African Broadcasting Corporation has come to the party and will broadcast most of the South African events at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

The biggest sporting event in the world starts today with the opening in Paris. Celine Dion is set to perform alongside Lady Gaga with Snoop Dogg being involved in the ceremony as well.

Usually, only athletes and personalities from the hosting nation are involved in the Olympic torch relay once it has arrived in that country. The organisers made a big decision and decided to involve several singers, celebrities and athletes from around the world.

South Africans will be able to watch most of the action after spending R122 million in broadcasting rights.

While most of the action will be available on the state-owned enterprise’s SABC Sports channel, some of the events will also be shown on SABC 1, SABC 2, and SABC 3. All four of these channels are free to watch and won’t cost viewers a subscription or other fees.

My Broadband reports that DStv specifically prohibited the SABC from broadcasting those events on its free-to-air channels on Openview, the subject of an ongoing legal battle between Multichoice and eMedia at the Competition Tribunal.
