FIA INVESTIGATES AFTER LIAM LAWSON’S NEAR MISS WITH MARSHALS IN MEXICO
A terrifying moment unfolded at the Mexico City Grand Prix when Liam Lawson narrowly avoided hitting two marshals who ran across the track early in the race.
The incident happened on lap three as the Racing Bulls driver rejoined the circuit from an early pit stop.
Debris from a first-lap collision had prompted marshals to clear the exit of Turn 1, but Lawson’s unexpected return to the track caught everyone by surprise.
Lawson shared his shock over the team radio: “Oh my God, are you kidding me?” I could’ve killed them!”
Later, he told reporters he “couldn’t believe” what he was seeing and described the situation as “so dangerous.”
In a statement, the FIA explained that race control had been informed about debris at Turn 1 and placed marshals on standby to clean up once all cars passed.
When Lawson pitted, race control rescinded the order for marshals to enter and displayed double yellow flags that usually signal a hazard and require drivers to slow down.
The FIA said all procedures were carried out with safety in mind, but admitted a full investigation is underway to determine how marshals ended up on the track as Lawson exited the pits.
