BRAND-NEW BANKSY ART STOLEN
Two men have been arrested in London after they were suspected of stealing Banksy’s latest art installation. The incident happened several hours after the infamous street artist installed and unveiled the artwork.
The artwork features three drones overlaid on a stop sign in the suburb of Peckham, South London.
Local news media and social media confirmed the creation of Banksy’s new artwork. The artist’s work mysteriously shows up, usually overnight, in public places. Some of his work has sold for millions of dollars.
Witnesses saw two men removing the traffic sign during daylight using bolt cutters. One witness told PA Media that they tried to stop the men, but was powerless.
“This guy comes up and grabs it, we watched in awe. We said ‘What are you doing?’ but no one really knew what to do, we sort of just watched it happen. We were all a bit bemused.”
In a statement, the London Metropolitan Police said the two men were arrested on Saturday and Sunday respectively. One is still in custody while the other has been released on bail.
With the theft still under investigation, the Metropolitan Police has appealed for anyone “with further information about the incident or the whereabouts of the sign” to get in touch.
The stop sign has since been replaced but without the artwork.
